The Shaw Prize and the HK Prize for Global Development

In a move that aims to encourage more local runners to participate in the Standard Chartered Hong Kong Marathon, title sponsor has increased the prize money for the race. Under the new ‘Special Incentive Award for Marathon’, permanent Hong Kong residents who finish the men’s marathon in under 3 hours (sub 3) or the women’s marathon in under 3:30 will win an additional prize of HK$10,000. This is a significant increase over the previous prize money, which was set at HK$200,000 for each category.

A single ticket has claimed a record-breaking top prize of over HK$193 million in Hong Kong’s Mark Six lottery during the recent Lunar New Year snowball draw. This is the largest jackpot in the history of the lottery game, and also the highest prize for a single ticket ever won in an instant scratchcard game.

The prestigious Shaw Prize, established in memory of media magnate and philanthropist Run Run Shaw, has been awarded to two scientists for their research on the human body’s ability to adapt to different environments. The winning work, published in the journal Science, highlights how different parts of the human body can develop to overcome obstacles when the body is subjected to changing environmental conditions.

Hong Kong’s pro-democracy activists have been nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize by nine US lawmakers, including Republican senator Marco Rubio and Democratic representative Jim McGovern. The US lawmakers have urged the Nobel Committee to consider awarding the prize to Hong Kong democracy campaigners who risked their lives in one of the world’s largest mass protests against Beijing’s crackdown on freedom of speech.

The Hong Kong Global Development Prize is a competition organized by Generocity to gather innovative ideas on how Hong Kong can promote international development and shape its future role in the world. Submissions should be based on the principle of “shared values, shared responsibility” and “international solidarity”, demonstrating that Hong Kongers and other stakeholders are committed to making a difference in people’s lives worldwide.

The prize will be presented in November 2025 at M+, a museum of modern and contemporary art. Six shortlisted artists will be given the opportunity to showcase their work in a solo exhibition organised by M+. The winner will receive a grand cash prize of HK$500,000. The winning project will be selected by an international jury convened in Hong Kong.
