Research shows that selecting the right college makes a difference. Finding an academic and financial fit is especially critical for our students who are all first generation, low-income, or minority students. Students who find the right fit are more likely to graduate and graduate with with less debt. Our students tend to select or are counseled into colleges that are not the best fit for them which puts them at a greater risk of not graduating or graduating deeply in debt. SCS works to reverse these trends by connecting students with 80 top tier colleges, which provide smaller class sizes, higher graduation rates, higher student satisfaction rates, and more importantly, generous “no loan” or “low loan” financial packages for qualified students. We counsel students individually and work with more than 90 high schools throughout the Los Angeles County to introduce students to colleges they may not have heard about. We look for an academic and financial fit while providing support throughout the entire decision making process.
College Application and Essay Reading Program
College admissions is competitive and our students need our support in telling their stories to college admissions officers. Each October, we pair our senior Summer Academy participants with volunteer essay readers who help our students transform their college application essays from good to great.
