Summer Academy is a rigorous and intensive seven-week academic enrichment program designed to prepare Scholars for college success. For their first summer, Scholars take an intensive college-level calculus and English writing course on the University of Southern California (USC) campus taught by USC professors. During their second summer, Scholars have the option to substitute English with a chemistry or computer science course. After lecture, Scholars attend small group discussion sections resembling a college learning environment. Each day concludes with personal and professional development sessions and presentations. The Scholars also hear from a variety of professionals across various industries, including technology, media, law, and consulting.
SCS launched the Summer Academy in 2012 after finding that a large percentage of Scholars were transitioning out of their intended majors, which largely included STEM majors. SCS reviewed the college transcripts of all our Scholars and found that many lacked the college-level writing, critical thinking, math, and science skills needed to persist in their chosen majors. We set out to reverse this trend and ensure our Scholars were prepared for the rigors of college-level coursework. SCS is changing the odds for low-income, first-generation students of color. Seventy-two percent (72%) of Scholars who attended the Summer Academy in 2012-2015 have now graduated in STEM fields or are in college and on track to graduate in a STEM major.
